About Rotate PDF
This tool turns PDF pages in steps of 90 degrees: a quarter turn clockwise, a quarter turn counter-clockwise, or a half turn of 180°. You can apply the turn to the whole document or only to the pages you pick, and the thumbnails show each page in its new orientation before you save, so mistakes are easy to spot.
Rotation here is lossless. Every PDF page carries a rotation setting that tells viewers and printers which way up to show it, and that setting is the only thing this tool changes. The text, fonts, scanned images and drawings on the page are not redrawn, re-compressed or turned into a picture. Text you could select and search before stays selectable and searchable afterwards.
Choosing which pages turn
Each page appears as a thumbnail in a grid. Click a thumbnail to select it and click it again to clear it. In a long document it is faster to type page numbers into the ranges box, for example 2, 7-9, or to use the buttons that select all pages, none, only the odd pages or only the even pages. The odd and even buttons earn their place with double-sided scans, where every back side tends to come out the same wrong way.
How to use Rotate PDF
- Add your PDFDrag your PDF in, or click the drop area to browse for it. Once the file is read, a thumbnail of every page appears in a grid.
- Pick the pages and the directionDecide whether the turn applies to all pages or only some. For some, click their thumbnails, type ranges such as 3-4, or use the odd or even button. Then choose 90° clockwise, 90° counter-clockwise or 180°.
- Check the thumbnails and saveThe thumbnails now show the new orientation. If every page is upright, save the PDF. The rotated copy downloads directly, and the file you started from is left as it was.
When people use it
A landscape page scanned on its side
Flatbed scanners often save a wide page, such as a spreadsheet printout or a certificate, lying on its side. Select just those pages, give them a quarter turn, and the document reads normally on screen without anyone tilting their head.
Upside-down backs of a two-sided scan
When a double-sided stack goes through a feeder, the back of each sheet can arrive upside down. The even-pages button selects pages 2, 4, 6 and onward in one go; apply 180° and every back side is upright again.
A phone capture that landed sideways
Receipts photographed with a phone app sometimes end up in a PDF lying on its side. Fix the rotation before you email the file, and the recipient won’t have to turn it in their viewer every time they open it.
Which way to turn: a quick reference
| How the page looks in its thumbnail | Choose |
|---|---|
| Top of the page points left; lines of text run upward | 90° clockwise |
| Top of the page points right; lines of text run downward | 90° counter-clockwise |
| Upside down | 180° |
Judge by the thumbnail, because it shows the page the way a PDF viewer currently displays it. Turns add up like you would expect: two quarter turns in the same direction make 180°, and a clockwise turn followed by a counter-clockwise one brings a page back to where it began.
What rotating changes inside the file
- Quality: unchanged. Scans keep their resolution and vector graphics stay sharp at any zoom, because nothing is rendered.
- Annotations: highlights, sticky notes and links sit on the page, so they turn together with it.
- Page shape: a quarter turn swaps the displayed width and height, so a portrait Letter page shows as landscape afterwards.
- File size: stays close to the original. The rotation setting takes up only a few bytes; any small difference comes from the file being saved again.
- Everything else: because only the rotation setting is rewritten, the rest of the document, including bookmarks, form fields and the title, is saved as it was.
Rotating alongside Split PDF and Merge PDF
Split PDF and Merge PDF move pages between files, but neither turns a page; each page keeps whatever orientation it already had. That means the rotation you set here travels with the page. Fix sideways scans before merging them with other documents or after; the result is the same.
When a rotation won’t solve it
- Slightly crooked scans. Only 90° and 180° steps are available. A page that went through the scanner a few degrees off straight needs to be scanned again.
- Pages in the wrong order. Turning a page doesn’t move it. Use Rearrange PDF to change the sequence or Delete PDF Pages to drop pages you don’t need.
- Locked documents. A password-protected PDF has to be opened with Unlock PDF first, and you’ll need its password.
- Hundreds of pages on a phone. Every thumbnail takes memory, so a very long or very large file is more comfortable on a computer.
Rotating is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. Your PDF is opened, rotated and saved inside this browser tab and is never uploaded; our privacy page lists a few DevTools checks that prove it.
