About Remove Blank Pages
Blank pages creep into scans in predictable ways. A stack that mixes one-sided and two-sided sheets, scanned in duplex mode, leaves an empty reverse side wherever a sheet had nothing on its back, scattered irregularly through the file. Divider sheets slipped between documents turn into empty pages, and office software sometimes exports a blank page from a stray page break. Hunting for them by hand in a long file is slow work. This tool looks at every page and points them out.
Detection is visual. Each page is rendered at a small size with pdf.js, an open-source PDF renderer, and the tool measures how much of that image is something other than near-white. A page with almost nothing on it is judged blank. How much counts as “almost nothing” depends on the sensitivity you choose: Strict, Normal (the default) or Loose.
Nothing is deleted on the tool’s say-so. Pages it considers blank are pre-selected in a grid of thumbnails, and you can click any thumbnail to add it to the selection or take it out before saving. The result downloads as yourfile-no-blanks.pdf, and the original stays as it was.
How to use Remove Blank Pages
- Load the scanAdd the PDF you want to clean up. The tool renders each page in miniature to measure it, which takes longer for a long scan, especially on a phone.
- Pick a sensitivity and reviewStart with Normal. Look over the pre-selected thumbnails, click any page that should stay, and click any empty page that was missed. Switch to Strict or Loose if the picks are clearly too many or too few.
- Save the cleaned copyRemove the selected pages and download the result, named after your file with -no-blanks added. The PDF you started from is left unchanged on your disk.
When people use it
A mixed duplex scan
A folder of correspondence goes through the scanner in two-sided mode, but only some letters have writing on the back. The empty reverse sides land in random places, and the detector finds them without you inspecting 120 thumbnails one by one.
Divider sheets in a batch scan
You slipped empty sheets between documents while feeding a big pile, and now you want one continuous file. Normal picks out those dividers, because it overlooks the dust and specks a scanner records on blank paper.
Empty pages in an exported report
A spreadsheet saved as PDF came out with several completely empty pages because its print area ran past the data. On a digital file like this, Strict is enough, since those pages are pure white.
Strict, Normal and Loose compared
| Sensitivity | Treats as blank | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Strict | Only pages that are truly empty | Digital documents and very clean scans |
| Normal (default) | Empty pages, even with scanner dust or small specks | Most scanned paperwork |
| Loose | Also pages with a tiny mark, such as a lone page number | Printed reports whose empty pages still carry a number |
Whichever setting you use, the thumbnails have the final word. Sensitivity only decides the starting selection, and every pick can be reversed with a click.
Pages that can fool the detector
- Faint content on Loose. Light pencil, a pale signature or very faint printing can cover so little of the page that Loose counts it as empty. Check every pre-selected page before saving, or go back to Normal.
- Tinted or grey paper. The measurement looks for near-white, so an empty sheet of coloured paper, or a scan with a grey cast, may not be picked up at all.
- Show-through and dark edges. Print bleeding through thin paper from the other side, or a dark band where the scanner lid didn’t close, can make an empty page look used.
- “Intentionally left blank” notices. A page carrying only that line has a little text on it. Loose may select it; Strict leaves it in place.
For anything the detector misses, click the page yourself. When the blanks are simply all the even pages, Delete PDF pages marks them in one step with its even button.
What the cleaned file keeps
The miniature renders exist only for measuring. The pages you keep are copied into the new file as they are, so text stays selectable and scans keep their resolution. Their order doesn’t change, although numbers printed on the pages will skip wherever a numbered blank was taken out. The file gets lighter by roughly what the removed pages weighed: on a scan each blank was still a full-page image, so the saving can be noticeable, while in a digital document an empty page weighs next to nothing.
To shrink the result further, try Compress PDF; to tidy its title or author fields, use Edit PDF metadata.
Locked files, long scans and privacy
A password-protected PDF can’t be rendered until it is unlocked with Unlock PDF, which needs the password. Because every page is drawn, a long scan takes longer to analyse than a short one, and a phone with little memory may struggle with a very large file that a computer handles easily. Rendering, measuring and saving all happen inside your browser tab, and no page is uploaded; follow these steps to check.
