Split a PDF in four steps
- Drop one PDF onto the tool above, or click it to choose the file. Its page count appears in the list.
- Pick a split mode: Every page, By ranges or Extract pages.
- For the last two modes, type the pages into the Pages box, for example
1-3, 5, 8-. - Click Split PDF, then save each part with its own Download button, or all of them at once with Download all (ZIP).
The splitter works on one PDF at a time; adding another file replaces the current one. Your original file is never modified.
Every page, by ranges, or extract: which mode to use
| Mode | You type | You get |
|---|---|---|
| Every page | Nothing | One PDF per page; a 12-page file becomes 12 one-page files |
| By ranges | 1-3, 5, 8- | One PDF per range: pages 1–3, page 5, and page 8 to the end |
| Extract pages | 2, 4, 9-10 | A single PDF containing only pages 2, 4, 9 and 10 |
Use Every page when an upload form accepts one page per file, By ranges to cut a document into several pieces in one pass, and Extract pages when you want a shorter version that keeps only the pages you list.
Page range syntax, with examples
5is a single page.1-3is pages 1 through 3.8-runs from page 8 to the last page, so you don’t need to know the exact page count.-2runs from the first page to page 2, meaning pages 1 and 2.5-3is pages 5, 4 and 3, in that reversed order.- Commas separate the parts, and spaces don’t matter, so
1-3,5and1 - 3, 5mean the same thing.
In By ranges mode, each comma-separated part becomes its own file. In Extract pages mode, all the parts go into one file in the order you typed them, so 9, 1-2 puts page 9 in front of pages 1 and 2. That makes extract mode a simple way to reorder pages too.
Page numbers count the physical pages from the start of the file, not the numbers printed in the footer. A report with four pages of front matter may print “page 1” on what is really the fifth page, so check the number your viewer shows. If you ask for a page that doesn’t exist, the tool tells you how many pages the PDF has.
Common jobs: one chapter, a scanned stack, a signature page
- Send one chapter. If chapter 3 of a manual occupies pages 41–58, choose Extract pages and type
41-58. The recipient gets a small file instead of the whole book. - Separate a scanned stack. A sheet feeder often produces one long PDF from a pile of unrelated papers. If pages 1–2 are an invoice, 3–14 a lease and 15 a pay stub, type
1-2, 3-14, 15, 16-in By ranges mode to get four separate documents, then rename them. - Pull a signature page. To return only the signed page 12 of a contract, extract
12. If the other side wants the cover page too, extract1, 12. - Fix a backwards scan. If a 20-page stack came out last page first, extract
20-1and the new file reads in the right order.
Output file names, ZIP downloads and quality
Each part is named after the original file plus the pages it holds. For report.pdf:
- A range becomes
report_p1-3.pdf, using the form<name>_p<first>-<last>.pdf; a reversed range like5-3becomesreport_p5-3.pdf. - A single page becomes
report_p5.pdf, and Every page mode producesreport_p1.pdf,report_p2.pdfand so on. - Extract mode produces one file,
report_extracted.pdf.
When a split produces two or more files, a Download all (ZIP) button appears, which saves you from clicking through dozens of downloads after splitting a long document page by page.
Pages are copied into the new files exactly as they are, never rendered to images or re-compressed. Text stays selectable, vector graphics stay sharp and scans keep their resolution. Each part carries the fonts and images its pages need, so the parts together can add up to more than the original, especially in Every page mode, where the same embedded font may be copied into every file. Each part also starts with fresh document properties, so a title or author set in the original isn’t copied, and bookmarks don’t carry over.
Limits, and when splitting isn’t the answer
- Locked files. Password-protected PDFs can’t be opened, so remove the password in the app you normally use before splitting.
- Whole pages only. The tool can’t cut one page into two, so a two-page spread scanned onto a single sheet stays one page.
- Not a size fix by itself. If the goal is getting under an email limit, Compress PDF may solve it without splitting. Splitting and compressing together also works.
- Very large files on phones. The whole PDF is held in memory, so a file of several hundred megabytes is better handled on a computer.
Need to put pieces back together, or combine extracted pages with other documents? Use Merge PDF.
Your document stays on your device
This PDF splitter runs inside your browser tab. The PDF is read from your disk into memory, split there, and the parts are saved straight back to your downloads. The page’s Content-Security-Policy only permits connections to pd00.com and a cookieless visit counter that never sees the file, so any other destination is blocked by the browser. To confirm nothing is uploaded, follow the DevTools steps on our privacy page.
