About Rearrange PDF
Rearranging changes the sequence of pages and nothing else. Every page of the PDF appears as a thumbnail; pick one up, drop it in a new spot, and the rest shift over to make room. When the grid reads the way you want, save, and you get a new PDF with the same pages in the new order. No page is added or lost along the way.
Dragging isn’t the only way to move a page. Each thumbnail carries arrow buttons that step it one place earlier or later. They suit small adjustments, small touch screens where dragging is fiddly, and anyone working from the keyboard. A Reverse order button turns the whole sequence around in one step, so the last page comes first.
The pages themselves are left exactly as they were. They are copied into the new file without being redrawn, which means text stays selectable, scans keep their full resolution and line drawings stay sharp at any zoom.
How to use Rearrange PDF
- Add your PDFLoad the PDF by dropping it on the tool or picking it from a folder. Its pages appear as thumbnails in their current order.
- Move pages into placeDrag a thumbnail to its new position, or press its arrow buttons to step it earlier or later. Use Reverse order if the whole document runs backwards.
- Save the reordered PDFWhen the grid shows the sequence you want, save. The new PDF downloads with the same pages in exactly that order.
When people use it
Moving a summary to the front
A report assembled from several exports may end with the executive summary. Drag it forward to sit right behind the title page, and the document reads in the order a reviewer expects.
Putting a rescanned page back
When a sheet jams and gets scanned again at the end of the stack, its thumbnail sits in the wrong place. Return it to its spot between its neighbors with one drag or a few arrow presses.
Tidying a packet after merging
Joining several files with Merge PDF puts each file in one block. If every signed form should sit behind its own cover letter, shuffle the combined file here before you send it.
Drag, arrows or reverse: which control to reach for
- Drag and drop covers long moves, such as taking page 40 up to second place.
- Arrow buttons are better for nudging a page one or two places. They are ordinary buttons, so you can tab to one and press Enter or Space instead of using a mouse or finger.
- Reverse order handles a document that is backwards from start to finish. If that is the only problem, Reverse PDF does the same thing as a single-purpose tool.
The grid is your preview. The order you see in the thumbnails is the order that gets saved, so a last look across the grid before saving is all the checking you need.
Rearrange, split and merge: three different jobs
All three tools move pages, but on different scales. Rearrange PDF reorders pages inside one document and keeps every one of them. Split PDF breaks a document into several files, and its Extract pages mode also writes pages out in whatever order you type, such as 3, 1, 2, which can be quicker than dragging when you already know the sequence by number. Merge PDF joins separate files end to end. Many real tasks use two of them: merge first, then rearrange the combined file.
Quality, size and what doesn’t carry over
Since pages are copied rather than redrawn, a moved page looks exactly as it did before. The new file is about the same size as the original; small differences come from the document being written out again. Bookmarks are not brought across, fillable form fields may stop responding, and the document’s title and author fields might be blank, so keep the original if any of those matter to you.
What this tool leaves to others
- Adding or removing pages. Use Delete PDF Pages to drop pages, or Merge PDF to bring in pages from another file.
- Turning pages. Sideways or upside-down pages are fixed with Rotate PDF.
- Printed page numbers. Numbers in headers or footers move with their pages and won’t match the new positions. Add Page Numbers can stamp a new sequence in a free corner.
- Locked files. A PDF that needs a password must be opened with Unlock PDF first.
- Very long documents. Dragging across hundreds of thumbnails is slow work, and a phone may run short of memory; a computer is the better place for big files.
The reordering is done locally in this browser tab, and your PDF is not uploaded at any point. Our privacy page walks through checking that in your browser’s developer tools.
